Consecutive exports thanks to a strong Ukrainian partnership

This summer will have been punctuated by several exports to Ukraine. Thanks to a real teamwork and the seriousness of our faithful Ukrainian partner, all these exports were successful!

About 1,000 animals from AXIOM breeding and selection farms set off for Ukraine in the summer of 2020. In order to ensure the well-being of the animals and to guarantee an irreproachable sanitary condition, the AXIOM teams and all the partners involved have followed a rigorous protocol for each of the 5 exports.

Among these 1,000 animals, gilts Adénia and Youna, and boars Duroc, Piétrain, Large-White and Landrace AXIOM from different French farms arrived by trucks at a unique AXIOM assembly center.

This site, with facilities dedicated to animal welfare, allows us to welcome animals in the best conditions and limit all forms of stress. In order to ensure their good health, teams were mobilized to feed and monitor the animals every day before their departure.

For each day of departure, fixed on Friday, the AXIOM veterinarian examined the interior of the trucks of our Polish service provider, after a compulsory disinfection, to avoid any sanitary risk before loading the animals.

A total of 7 trucks took the road to Ukraine during August and September. Each trip, lasting 3 to 4 days, was interrupted by an obligatory 24-hour stopover in the Czech Republic, in an approved “control-post”.

This summer’s exports have supplied 5 Ukrainian farms with up to 2,000 sows.

2 more exports are expected by the end of the year, with about 700 hybrid and purebred animals.

Investing in biotechnology to serve the industry

AXIOM, in partnership with the VetAgroSup school, Thierry Joly from ISARA in Lyon and IFIP, is launching a new scientific project: embryo freezing. This project, carried out in a breeding farm, meets multiple objectives, both for AXIOM but also for the whole pig industry.

Today, different techniques of assistance exist to help reproduction: artificial insemination, semen freezing etc. The freezing of embryos, still uncommon in the pig world, has been studied for many years but has been put aside, to the point where its know-how was beginning to disappear.

However, it is proving to be a true biotechnology of the future by opening up new perspectives for animal husbandry, particularly to facilitate transport. It offers economic, health and practical advantages: the transport of live animals is today costly, complex and subject to multiple regulations. The transport of frozen embryos could alleviate these numerous problems.

By investing in this technology, AXIOM meets 2 objectives:

        – Enrich its scientific know-how, acquire and master this state-of-the-art scientific technique, at the service of the industry.

        – Contribute to the preservation of genetic variability. This project will feed the National Cryobank, a Scientific Interest Grouping managed by the State. It contributes to the safeguarding of genes, embryos and semen of French domestic animals, including the porcine species.

On September 3rd, the official launch of the new AXIOM boar took place at the SCEA JOSSE, AXIOM’s breeder.

On the occasion of the launch of VALENS, a press conference was organized at the SCEA JOSSE, in Augan, Morbihan.

This event brought together several representatives of the agricultural press as well as the I.A. Station, Genes Diffusion and Yxia, where VALENS doses are now available for sale.

This day was an opportunity to highlight both the strong points of the new boar, and also the breeding of Pascal and Christine JOSSE, one of the production sites of VALENS.

VALENS, a balanced boar that improves on all criteria

This new boar has been specially designed to meet the main requirements of the French market, based on a “criterion by criterion” selection approach and not on an overall genetic value:

        – Excellent growth,

        – Boars selected on their carcass qualities and their yield, for all outlets,

        – Vigorous piglets at birth thanks to its NN profile (absence of the halothane sensitivity allele),

        – a very lean boar, certified 99% odourless, suitable for the whole male market.

CriteriaAverage I.A. Station ValensGain (per pork butcher) compared to the
        market average*
        ADG> 1 100 g / day+ 24 g / day
        MRPBack fat < 6.3 mm
        Muscle thickness > 70.6 mm

        * Market average determined by the AXIOM 2019 terminal boar test (For more information on this test, please contact one of our sales representatives in France: https://www.axiom-genetics.com/contact)

These improvements ensure an overall economic gain per pork butcher of at least €2.70!

The VALENS, adapted to standard markets, differentiated markets and whole males, ensures performance comfort and driving serenity. Customer breeders benefit from a real technical support offered by AXIOM.

The SCEA JOSSE, AXIOM selector, one of the production sites of VALENS

The SCEA JOSSE, located in Augan, Morbihan, is part of the AXIOM Group’s network of breeders. This air-filtered breeder-fattener farm has 3.5 MTU, 200 sows in 7 strips, with weaning at 28 days. The farm, with on-farm feed production, covers 170 hectares and produces cereals and protein crops.

During the press conference, Pascal JOSSE presented his farm, one of the production sites of the VALENS boar, and revealed the first boars intended for I.A. Station in the showcase of his breeding.

        New AXIOM multiplier!

The AXIOM Group is pleased to count, among its multiplication network, the CASSAN Simon breeding farm, a new multiplier in the South-West of France.

Well located and isolated, this farm was entirely depopulated and repopulated with a herd sanitized in AXIOM genetics on August 31st. It will be able to serve the production farms in the region where the demand for Adenia gilts is constantly increasing and offers very good results in total autonomy.

Breeders in the area will be informed of the dates of the first broadcasts of Adenia, produced on this new site.
